Sustainability Policy

Bus Travel NZ prides itself on being proactive in the field of sustainability.

Our work ethics and procedures relative to the bus and coach industry, including tourism, are constantly under scrutiny but particularly in an environment such as Auckland Airport.

Our commitment is to protect the environment and addressing any climate change issues we may have contributed to; to do the right thing always by respecting the environment and our people; adopting leading edge practices to grow the business with integrity.

Vehicle Sustainability

Our vehicle purchases take into consideration environmentally-friendly Euro engines returning exceptional fuel consumption.

We work closely with our preferred vehicle manufacturers to stay abreast of the latest available and developing technologies, all the while considering how these could be appropriate in our specific operating environment.  The challenge is always a balance between total reliability, complete efficiency and assurances we are reducing our carbon footprint.

Case Study – 2017

With increased importance placed on lowering emissions, the company believed the Auckland Airport provided an excellent environment and prospect for an electric solution.  As an interim step, the company considered micro-hybrid vehicles, and the Yellow Bus service provided a perfect environment for such an installation.

Following considerable investigation, the Wrightbus Micro Hybrid Streetlite bus was chosen for the Yellow Bus product.

The Euro 6 rated micro hybrid concept recovers braking energy, but rather than use it to directly benefit propulsion as in full hybrid systems, this energy is stored in storage systems already on board and is used to power pneumatics, hydraulics and electrical items. These components would otherwise require power from the engine and, by using the energy harvested from the braking system, reduces overall fuel consumption.

The micro hybrid fleet came into service in January 2018 operating around the airport precinct for our Yellow Bus service.  Since its introduction, we have recorded a 30% savings in fuel and emissions.

As the company continues to consider long-term investment fleet solutions and is committed to an all-electric passenger transport solution in the mid-term.

Our Auckland office and workshop facility also exhibit a high standard of compliance and is deemed to be a safe place to work.  Last inspected 2018.
